Clothing is an important part of your portrait. Here are some tips for clothing based upon the type of session you are booking.
Environmental: I highly recommend a clothing consultation for an environmental session. Clothing will depend upon the location of the session. Because environmental sessions have a lot going on in the background, I recommend solid colors and that the family all matches in color. Your clothing goal with this session is pick clothing that will blend with the environment, yet still be a representation of your personality.
Relationship: Black clothing is always preferred; however, other dark clothing such as navy or dark gray also work. Just be sure that all people within the portrait have the same tone so you aren’t mixing lights and darks together, which can become distracting in the portrait. Long sleeves are also preferred so that attention is not drawn to bodies, but instead kept on faces.
Baby Collection: There are a couple of directions you can go with your baby’s clothing. Option one is to go with no clothing or just a diaper cover. This allows you to see all their cute little rolls and dimples that they will quickly grow out of. Another option is to go with more classic children’s clothing. Solid pastel colors or whites are easy to find and match. The last option is to pick something fun like a tutu or themed outfit. Colorful clothing with bold patterns and fun accessories showoff the whimsical side of childhood. Keep in mind that this last clothing option works best when a baby can sit up on their own, which is usually seven months or older.
Fresh: With a Fresh Session, I want you to get creative and have fun with clothing. Forget any preconceptions about portrait clothing. Go with trendy fashion forward clothing styles and accessories. Mix colors, patterns or add a unique accessory like colorful shoes or a hat. If color and patterns aren’t for you, think about a polished urban look. Either way I want you to have fun and reflect your personality.
