About Me

Welcome to my website, and thank you for taking the time to look through my images.

I specialize in fine art family portraiture and event photography in a photojournalistic style. That is, I don’t only take posed photographs. Often, I allow scenes to unfold untouched before me, so that I can capture both the personalities of the subjects and the idiosyncrasies of the moments. I capture the unscripted moments that depict true emotion, and I tell the stories of your events through still images. I am a photographer, yes, but even more I am a storyteller. I want to tell your story.

Photography has always been my passion. However, in 2004 while completing my degree in Ecology at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and shooting images of this country whose sounds, sights and smells thrilled me, I realized how much I truly loved the art of photography. Returning to the United States, I developed my technical skills while shooting events for family and friends. Word spread about my work, and when my regular job got in the way of my growing photography business, I followed my heart and become a full time photographer. I have since become a member of the Professional Photographers of America, where I continue to grow and develop my skill.

I shoot weddings, engagements, pregnancies and family events. On my own, I capture things as diverse as nature and wildlife, whatever new masterpiece has found its way out of my kitchen, and whatever new adventures I’ve stumbled inside. No matter what the subject, I believe there to be a difference between taking a picture and making a picture. I love to make pictures. I believe that every image should stand alone. Each image should be beautifully composed and should tell its own story about a particular moment: the direction in which the light is falling, a sideways glance before the wedding ceremony, two knees touching. It’s important to me to spend time getting to know you and your loved ones, so that you feel comfortable with me and my camera. This, as well as my intuition, developed from years of observing life unfolding, help me capture timeless images that are not just a series of isolated images, but stories that will last forever.

My business, Sara Atkins Photography, is based in the San Francisco Bay Area but takes me all over the world to photograph new adventures, weddings and babies. To learn more about me and to see what I am currently working on, please visit my blog at www.saraatkinsphotograph.com/blog.
