I had so much fun with the Steverson family a few weeks ago and I am thrilled to share the images that they selected from our session together. The session was for Jerry's 50th birthday, so a big Happy Birthday to Jerry! I think the images came out great. We spent the morning out at Garin Regional Park, just across the Dumbarton Bridge from Menlo Park.Tracy said to me that when she visualized our portrait session together what was most important for her was to show how much I enjoys who each of her family members are, and to show how much she loves them. Mission accomplished.

<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles</legend>

Steverson Family Sneak Peak | Menlo Park Family Photographer (saraatkinsphotography.com)

</fieldset>

One for Mom {teaser} | San Francisco Family Photographer

How cute is little Tess? Yesterday afternoon I got together with Ganya and her family to photograph them at Pier 7 in San Francisco (just down the Embarcadero from the Ferry Building). We had a great time and we got some great shots for their Mom. Don't forget Mothers Day is this Sunday!

Ganya, thank you so much for a great session. I can't wait to show you the rest of your images!

p.s. everyone says that they want 'natural' or 'un-posed' images. Now, I myself love those un-posed shots as well, but I will tell you that 99% of the time when I show people images they end up purchasing the 'posed' image. Now, the reason I put this image up in particular is that getting a shot where everyone looks good and is looking at the camera, especially when one of those people is about 2 years old is a HUGE challenge. So for that reason, I am very happy with this image.

What is better than doing what I love {photography}? It is doing what I love while documenting someone else doing what they love. If you can recall my gushing Samantha's Music and how beautiful that was, this shoot had much of the same feeling.
Amanda's Munchkins {teaser} | Menlo Park Family Photographer

When is the best time to shoot? I always tell my clients that the best time to shoot is early in the morning or in the afternoon about an hour before sunset. The worst time to shoot is when the sun is directly over head creating harsh light and deep dark shadows and squinty eyes.

But, sometimes you just don't have the option of shooting in the perfect light. Sometimes you have to go with the flow and know how to find the good light. Both of these images were taken at about 11:00am. Read: the worst possible time to shoot. But what are you supposed to do when trying to schedule around nap times and all the other things that life throws in the way? One great option: find shade. That is what we did with the image on the right (also note the drool on the chin. This is way too cute for photoshop). There was a tree just behind this bench providing nice shade while the pavement around the bench bounced the light up to fill in the shadows resulting in a beautifully lit image. The image on the left is another way to get a good shot in difficult light. Granted, I was a bit lucky with this one, our kiddo stood right where I wanted without any direction and I just happened to grab the shot in the 1 second that he stood still with that awesome expression on his face. We basically said go play and I shot when the opportunity presented itself. But this does demonstrate what to look for. The sun is behind him and camera right, and I am below him creating longer shadows. Now shooting from below isn't the most flattering angle, but when you step back it isn't a problem . I LOVE both of these shots.

Amanda thank you for a great session! I can't wait to show you the rest of the images!

Tidepool Trek | Half Moon Bay Photography

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in the day to day 'work' part of my job that I forget to shoot for me. Luckily, my friend Michael doesn't let me get away with that. Michael is an amazing photographer and a great friend (maybe I will convince him to do a guest post). We met in October of last year when I was shooting at the Berkley Botanical Gardens. He was of course out shooting bugs and flowers (he does some awesome macro photography) and overheard me chatting away with my clients. After my shoot he approached me and asked if he could come along on some shoots with me. I never turn down a helping hand so I dumped him in the deep end and asked him to join me for an all day portrait shoot with 30-50 families. The poor guy didn't know what he was getting himself into. Amazingly, after that day he was still smiling and super keen. I knew right then he was a keeper.

Michael has come along with me on several shoots since then and he has managed to get me out of my digital dungeon and shooting for fun which is awesome. From my end, I just hope he has learned something about the business side of photography. I will be bringing him with me to Jessica & Charlie's wedding in a couple of weeks and I am looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

These photos are the result of our last adventure together. Unfortunately just as the tide was hitting negative it started to rain. We both managed to get a few shots, but I think out favorite part was the breakfast after. I guess that is the way it goes some times. We had fun anyway.

Thanks for the shot of me in action Michael!

Exploring an old location in a new light | Menlo Park Family Photography

Sometimes going to a old location at a different time of day renders unlimited new possibilities. Normally I am shooting in the late afternoon as this is the 'best' light. When I say the 'best' what I really mean is the easiest. It is predictable and, well, generally beautiful. But sometimes shooting at the best time just isn't a possibility. This was one of those times. We decided to meet with Elizabeth and her girls at Twin Pines park in Belmont in the early morning. While the light is still beautiful at this time of day it is different. And I LOVED it. So I guess my point is, as long as you know how to 'see' light you can really shoot at any time of day. OK, enough about light.

This was an AWESOME shoot. The amazing Michael accompanied me (more about this fabulous fella later) and we had SO MUCH FUN on this shoot. I was loving the girls, they are all so sweet. The sisterly bond is so special and I loved watching them interact with one another. They are both away in college now and only get to see one another on special occasions so it was great to document their time together. It helped that they are both absolutely gorgeous. And you can just see how happy it makes Elizabeth to have them back together. Such a nice family.

These are the images that they picked out. They got some really beautiful matted prints, I think they are going to look beautiful on their wall! Ladies, thank you so much for a wonderful morning in the park!

Lisa + Greg | Pacifica Wedding Photography

Just a quick peek at one of the images from Lisa & Greg's engagement session. The weather was playing with my emotions as I drove out to Pacifica. It was beautiful in Menlo Park and then just 15 minutes away it was socked in with fog. As I pulled into Pacifca it cleared up and it was perfect. Just in time for our session together. It is a good thing too because we already had to reschedule due to weather once!

I had such a great time getting to know Lisa and Greg a bit better. We wondered around the beach, a beach where Greg often goes surfing. We talked about their upcoming wedding and how they met. It was a great afternoon. And by the way, Pacifica is beautiful. If you haven't been, please go. I had no idea that it was so nice and just a short drive away.

Lisa and Greg I can not wait for your wedding!

Elizabeth's Family Portraits | San Francisco Family Photographer

One of the fun parts of my job is in finding locations. Sometimes I scout out a location before hand, sometimes we wing it on the spot. This was one of those times that we flew by the seat of our pants. Elizabeth wanted to shoot at the Presidio of San Francisco and I thought that was a brilliant idea. I love exploring new places with my clients. I wasn't quite sure where we would shoot and this is one of the locations that we found. It was somewhere around mid day, so the light was pretty harsh. We picked out a spot with some nice shade and these are a few of the images that Elizabeth picked out for her holiday card and prints. Shooting in new locations stretches me creatively and doing so in the mid-day sun is even more of a challenge. A challenge that I look forward to.

Elizabeth, thank you for being amazing! I look forward to photographing you with your new baby in November!

Steverson Family Sneak Peak | Menlo Park Family Photographer

Today I am stuck in my digital dungeon the whole day working on sales tax. Not my favorite part of my job. It is days like today that leave me exhausted and mostly uninspired. Doesn't the world know that I am not meant to sit behind a desk? That is why I post images like this one. To keep me smiling and remembering why I do what I do. I am in the business of capturing relationships. It just so happens that I also have to do Sales Tax.

Tracy, thank you so much for a great shoot on Sunday! It was awesome to meet you and your lovely family (or at least a few of them!). I am busy working on your images and I can't wait to show you the rest of them! I LOVE this shot of the two of you. You can just see what an awesome relationship the two of you have. So super sweet.

I had such a great time with Julia, Randy and little Rowen on Friday. But who knew that San Francisco could get to be so hot! We met on the Embarcadero at the Ferry Building to get some family portraits and by the time we were done I think we were all melting. Nonetheless we managed to get some great images.
