Welcome Hey there, thanks for stopping by! Welcome to my little corner of the internet, my place to share my voice and photography. In case you don't know me, I am Sara (that's me to the left, the one without a big white furry coat). I am a photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area, California. I LOVE my work, and you will see a bit of that sneaking in here. I also use this as a place to share other parts of my life. You will find adventures, food and little tidbits about my life with my darling husband and our two fat cats.  Please feel free to have a look around and even leave me a note. I would love to hear from you!

Yes, I am still here. The last week has been super busy so I haven't had time to blog. Even if I did have time I do not have internet at my new place yet so I couldn't. But, the good news is that I signed up at ironworks, an amazing gym in Berkeley. They have internet access, and while I am here blogging I might even try to get in a workout. There is so much I have to write about and I am feeling pretty behind. But, while there is a bit of a hiatus, please let me know if there are any burning questions that I can help you with. I have a few that I still need to get to such as, 'why do you have Tupperware on your flash?'  or 'How do you back up your files?' You have these to look forward to. Also, to come... photos of our new place and of course a backlog of weddings and portrait sessions and more travel photography! Until then, don't give up on me... I am still here.

Despite all that is going on I have managed to update the website with some information that you might find useful. If you re interested in finding the updated info go to the WEBSITE and click on the info tab, I have added three new sections. The first is called 'clothing', this is where I make suggestions on what you might consider wearing for your portrait session. The second tab is called 'policies' this is where I lay out the law. I have adjusted my business policies, so take a look and let me know if you have any questions. Finally, I have a new tab called 'planning'. The planning tab is for you to look at as you are preparing yourself for a portrait session. So, take a look, let me know what you think!

Both, but I was primarily thinking of me. We're planning for the end of the year. :)

The first thing that people ask me when they meet me is often, where are you from? Me? Well, my answer is normally that I am trans-Atlantic. Or, 'I'm a global citizen'. I should probably say: I am from South African Airlines, I spend so much time on their planes. I have met so many people in the last few weeks that I feel like I am saying this over and over. So, I am just going to put it out there. Now when people ask me I can just direct them to my blog. Now maybe I won't feel like a broken record (which is good because the majority of people I meet have probably never even seen a record before).

So here it goes. My Dad was in the military, yup I am an army brat. I prefer army sweetheart. I was born in Oregon. We moved to Texas and then to Germany where we lived for 5 years. I traveled throughout Europe with my family which is probably where my love for travel started. We left Germany when I was about 8 years old and our family landed in Monterey, California. I went to U.C. Davis for my undergraduate degree and finished my degree in South Africa at the University of Cape Town. (deep breath) I fell in love and married my fella in South Africa after bouncing between hemispheres for a couple of years. We decided to start out in the San Francisco Bay Area and that is where we have been for the last few years. And now, we are between homes.

It is ten days until my next departure. My next few months are going to be filled with adventure, travel and of course... photographs!! Next stop: Johannesburg, South Africa.

You can see a map of my travel plans Here.

As always, none of our plans are concrete yet. But that's the way I like it. It keeps things interesting. I will be in the Bay Area until the 23rd of March. I will not be back until April 27th. If you have any portrait needs be sure to let me know, I still have a few spots open before I leave!

When I get back to the United States the plan is to visit a few new cities in the US, then it is off to Italy for a month. When we get back from Italy, my husband and I will be moving to a new city for good. But don't worry, I will still be making frequent trips to Northern California. We will just have to be a little more strategic in our planning.

Phew. So do you see why: 'where are you from?' is such a hard one for me to answer? That's right, I am a global citizen. And home, well that's the warm place snuggled next to my husband. Life is beautiful.

Carol McGinty:

We found a farmer in our neighborhood that delivers our "clean" organic food and eggs every Friday for only $7.00. I am in heaven! Thank you for encouraging us to find our farmer through the slow food movement website that you sent. He brings us so much food, that I can share it with Yvette and Trent and a friend, for only $7! See you in the Bahamas. Are we blessed or what? Love, Me

(03.14.10)
Felicia:

I want your life, Sara! :) I hope you settle somewhere back in the bay area.

(03.14.10)
Sara Atkins:

Thanks Felicia, I am a lucky gal. Life has been pretty great to me so far. But, you are pretty blessed yourself! I wish I knew where I was going to end up! It won't be the Bay Area, but I will continue to take jobs up here so I will be here fairly often. Thank you for your words!

(03.14.10)
Sara Atkins:

I am so happy for you! Our box was quite a bit more than $7.00 so you are getting a great deal! And eggs too... that is fantastic! The Bahamas are going to be great, I am really looking forward to it! xoxo

Cindy:

Wow!! I wish I had such an interesting life. I am so excited for you! Can't wait to hang out with you again soon. Safe travels and keep blogging!

Rosie Rowell:

Hello - we are going to be in CT for a month around Easter, perhaps we will see you there. Great blog page, lovely pics! Rosie x

(03.24.10)
Sara Atkins:

That would be fantastic Rosie! We will have to make a plan to get together, I am probably going to be in Cape town around the 6th for about a week! I would love to see you!

This is a photograph that I made while in Cape Town at the beginning of this year. I love this mountain. I love the way she hugs the city. Table Mountain is probably one of my favorite natural features of the Cape. When I lived in South Africa, I would wake up every morning and peak out my window to see the mood of the mountain. Sometimes serene, sometimes angry, but never the same as the day before. This shot was made just a few days before we left this last trip. I always get the same sad feeling when my departure arrives. This time, I wasn't sure how long it would be before I returned. Our life is changing so quickly now that I wasn't sure that we would have the time to make it back for Christmas 2010. Well, here I am just 2 months later and already I may be on my way back to South Africa.

Life is a little bit crazy. To be honest, it is a lot crazy. As I sit here writing this post, I am surrounded by boxes of every shape and size. The inevitable has finally arrived. Charlie and I gave our 30 day notice to give up our apartment a few days ago, we are on the road again. The next few months promise to be exciting. Charlie is heading to South Africa for work and I will be in California for the next month tying up loose ends, going to a fantastic photography conference in Las Vegas, potentially doing some shooting with the Food Network and the Travel Chanel, and finally, joining Charlie in Johannesburg, South Africa. While there I will be photographing a couple weddings, and hopefully joining Charlie on his research to do a bit of documentary photography. We will conclude our adventures abroad with a wedding in the Bahamas. Then it is back to the States, final destination to be decided. I love uncertainty. There are some people that need to have a plan, everything needs to be scheduled out. I am not one of those people. Love spontaneity and a little bit of the unknown. Well, it looks like life has decided to dish out a huge portion of uncertainty.

So, if you want to book a session before I leave, I suggest you let me know as soon as possible. I do have a few spots open before I leave!

Carol, thank you! And I am treasuring every moment.
Katy, thanks! Isn't it funny? I suppose everyone needs to plan a bit, but some of us really need to have a plan and some of us just don't.
