'Pick Me'
About three years ago I started volunteering my services at the Oakland Animal Services. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for furry critters and especially those in need of some extra love. I have been able to photograph animals that have survived some pretty awful situations and it feels great to know that my photographs help to tell their story. Not only do I get to help raise awareness, but I also get to help them to find their forever homes. This year the Oakland Animal Services are having their charity event: Sweet! Pawsitivity for Oakland's Animals. When I was asked if I would like to donate an art piece I immediately accepted. I didn't want to auction off a random piece though, I wanted it to be more than that. An idea for a studio portrait came to mind, and the above portrait is the end result. Each of the animals in this image were at the Oakland Animal Services (some of them are still there). I wanted to show that one does not have to go to a breeder to find a perfect pet. There are so many just waiting for their forever home, just waiting for love.
The above photograph was printed on canvas and wrapped around a 24 inch wooden frame. It will be auctioned off at the event tomorrow along with many other fabulous items. I have also donated a portrait session and would love it if you would come and support these critters. There is a $10 recommended donation at the door. Please follow THIS LINK to find out more.
Last weekend Charlie's firm had their company retreat in Hawaii. It was an amazing time, honestly though... when is Kauai ever not amazing? The water is incredible, the warm breeze refreshing. It was a nice reminder to slow down and appreciate life. Here are a few shots I grabbed when I wasn't swimming with turtles or basking in the sun.
Girl, you are so spoiled! Glad you got to go. It's one of my favorite places on earth and your photos make it even prettier than I remember, if that's possible. Hugs, Carol

Six Years Ago: Cape Town: District Six

One of the best parts of this new site though, is my ability to have mini-sites! Now my lovely clients can have their own websites branded just for them, with their pictures. They can even update the content as they like. This is perfect for weddings, new families or even seniors getting ready to head off to college. I LOVE it.
With regards to the branding, I decided to go with a hand drawn garden theme. Simple, black and white. The only real color is coming from the images. There is a bit of movement. The fella thinks it's kitschy, I think it's cute. I mean, how does a little snail sliding across the bottom of your screen not make you smile? Other thoughts... the website may or may not be changing with the seasons. Now it is flowers, in the autumn it may be leaves. We shall see...
I would love it if you could take the time to stop by the new site and give me your thoughts. Do you love it? Do you hate it? Visit the website and let me hear your thoughts!
Dad # 2 says go retro, mom # 2 says ignore him and do what you want.
(05.16.11)Great job Sara, very cool with the new website!
Love that you launched it! Awesome. Can't wait to pick your brain for website design now that you've mastered the Showit world :)
I luv it! Should be my theme!

One Year Ago: FAQ: Travel Lens
Two Years Ago: Sports: Rugby: Olymic Club vs. Stanford
Six Years Ago: Franschhoek Wine Tour

Charlie is so excited to start this next chapter, and so am I. Getting into his first choice school is a dream come true. I feel like we have been putting every ounce of good juju towards Stanford, just willing him to get in. I know my mom would have probably gone to the dean herself and begged if she thought it would help. But, no begging was required. Despite coming from South Africa, with no network here and no job prospects. Despite his many obstacles along the way, despite his broken arm: Charlie got into Stanford. And I am so proud of him.
So, we are probably going to get in quite a bit of traveling in before moving down to Stanford in August. I am going to continue to enjoy my cute little flat as long as possible, our next abode will probably not be quite so charming. As much as I love Stanford I am not sure student housing is going to compare with the beautiful light that fills our current home. But, I am certainly not going to be complaining, we are overwhelmingly fortunate.
Congrats on your good news Sara. We are very happy for you. I feel silly asking this, but I really want to know. What is a MBA? Love you my niece, Auntie Rosie
(04.08.11)Hooray! So glad you are staying in Cali! Congratulations to Charlie!!
