Two Years Ago: Katie and Clinton's Guest Book

Seeing someone that you love in pain makes everything around you stand still. Nothing else matters. We were in a Olympic Lifting class, it was the last lift of the session. I can still hear Diane, 'ok this is the last one, so make it good.' We were all watching him, trying to learn what Diane was teaching, learning through him. He made it good all right. As he lifted the bar one last time it caught on his watch. He was unable to get his elbows under the bar to catch it. His arm got crushed between his knee and an 185 pound bar descending at speed. I would have gladly traded spots with him if I could. Not that I could even lift 185 pounds like that if I tried.
He laid on the ground and I ran over, he was holding his wrist. I look at it and could see it had clearly been broken. Charlie was practically translucent, all of the blood had drained from his face, he was in shock. Joe was kind enough to drive us to the hospital, I would have probably crashed the car I was in such a panic. Thank goodness he was there. Another Saturday lost to an ER waiting room. The x-ray revealed that yes, his arm was broken. Not in one place, but in two. He had broken his Ulna and his Radius.
So now, the poor fella has a broken arm and he has his first business school interview TODAY! He has to fly out to Canada tomorrow for work and probably back here on Thursday to see an orthopedic surgeon. What a mess. Lets hope for no surgery.
The current challenge is to figure out how to navigate the next several weeks with one arm. How do you tie your shoes? How about flossing? Getting luggage into an overhead bin? How about driving? How do you get into business attire? Are sweater vests in, because that might just work.

Charlie I feel your pain. Been there done somewhat the same. Hope you have some good drugs.
(02.27.11)I can identify with how to navigate with only one arm. Between my shoulder injuries and my numerous finger issues on my right arm, I have become pretty adept at being left handed when needed. I am right handed so this was quite an adjustment. It's the little issues you become acutely aware of. Having to open up a can of soda with the other hand, shaving, starting up the car, putting on your seat belt, using the bathroom.... It's tough. Tell Charlie to hang in there and best of luck with the interview!
(02.27.11)Travis is dealing with one hand right now, d/t carpal tunnel surgery. As far as flossing goes, try Pluckers they are great but in regards to another personal hygiene habit that involves toilet paper, well, that is another story! Hugs.....Jules
(02.27.11)We happen to work in this field and know some pretty fine hand surgeons (Ethan especially knows his stuff) so let us know if you need a recommendation!
