It is February. How did that happen? It is as if I blinked and a month just flew right by. Well, it is a new month, and I missed the desktop freebie last month due to travel etc. So this months image is extra special.

Photograph is a funny thing. Anyone can take a picture, cameras are readily available and pretty easy to use. The world is full of photographers. But there is a difference between taking a picture and making a picture. I pride myself in my ability to MAKE a picture. Every image that I produce should stand on its own. It should be beautifully composed and It should tell a story. This image does that, and that is what makes it special. I am a photographer, yes I am. But even more, I am a story teller.

What story do you think I am telling with this image? Leave a comment on the blog. The best story teller will receive a digital copy of this image for use on their desktop.

I think this pictures says 'There is beauty all around us. Be it in the contrast of colors and textures to the shades of old and new and the acquiscance of young and old. There is beauty all around us'.

Ravi:

Hello Sara, this is Ravi from India. I am huge fan of your photographs; I never searched wallpapers for my desktop.
I always used your photograph for decorating my desktop. Please don’t worry I am not misusing your snaps for commercial purpose or neither I am selling those.
It’s just that I love your snaps, especially like these once.

I regularly check with your site and I like to read your stories and humors. Whenever I get the free time in office I only see your website.

I got to know about your photography from “Jayashree Patil”, you took JP and Jolies marriage snaps. From the day I saw those snaps I never ever missed a chance to see your website.

But you are doing the best…. I wish you could take my one snap  that at least I can put on FB and MySpace 

Take care Sara. You are my mascot, I also love to shoot photograph but seeing your comments on this snap I am kind of depressed that I am not having a single quality to make a picture  I just click the snaps 

Ravi, thank you so much for your kind words. I am flattered that you think so much of my work. Please let me know if there is anything that I can help you with as far as photography is concerned. I know what it is like to be learning and if there is anything I can do to help I would love it.

I have done it before, and with Charlie's urging I have made the leap once again into the lovely world of the CSA. What is a CSA you ask, well let me tell you. It stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Basically, how it works is a group of people come together and pledge their support ($$) to a local farm. That farm in return supplies a weekly box of produce (sometimes including meat dairy eggs and/or flowers).

The idea of having this sort of food system started in the 1960's in Germany, Switzerland and Japan. The concept didn't find it's way to the United States until 1984! Since then community supported farms have been organized throughout North America and Canada. In fact, North America alone has at least 13,000 CSA farms.

The best part, CSAs generally focus on the production of high quality, seasonal food, often organic and/or biodynamic. And it is all straight from the farmer!

Last time we were with Full Belly Farm. This time after searching through the many CSAs on Local Harvest, we have decided to go with Terra Firma Farms. Terra Firma is just west of Winters on the edge of the Sacramento Valley. The farm supports 42 employees and feeds over 700 people weekly. The farm is 100% organic and... beautiful.

Charlie and I are pretty big vegetable consumers, so we decided on the medium box for the two of us. So, that comes to $98 for a whole month of fresh, organic, seasonal produce delivered just down the road. Not so bad.

We received our first box, and it looks delicious!

And here is the breakdown:
one beautiful head of red cabbage
one bunch of red russian kale
ten cute little carrots
five pink lady apples
one butternut squash
two navel oranges
three little heads of broccoli
five beets
two ginormus leeks
eleven yellow fin potatoes

All fresh, all organic. This mornings breakfast included the cabbage and the kale and I am here to testify, that it was mucho delicioso!

While in Plettenburg Bay the boys took advantage of the warm waters to get in a little bit of surf skiing. Ryan brought over the skis and Jacobus and Charlie did their best to try to stay upright. I took advantage of the situation to perfect my sports photography. It was a bit tough going without my telephoto, but I made do.

Jacobus, excited about the prospect of getting some lekker waves. (Cape Town to California translation: Dude was looking for some hella cool waves.)

IMG_1718x.jpg
OK, so maybe the waves weren't exactly HUGE but at least he stayed upright.

IMG_1628.jpg
oops... getting distracted.

IMG_1637x.jpg

IMG_1646x.jpg
Despite what is looks like, Ryan was actually trying to HELP charlie, not flip him over. Surf skis are known for their instability, as Charlie quickly learned.

Ryan, showing the fellas how it's done.

And finally, this is where they share their stories on how huge the waves were. Or, how many times they managed to tip themselves over in that wobbly boat.

Good news! If you remember our friend REMY, he found a home! His new owners saw the images that I took of Remy and fell in love. What a thrill to be a part of such a great story. And, I am officially a published photographer. Well, published by someone other than myself. The Examiner ran a story about Remy and used my images. If you would like to read his full story and see my 'published' photos you can see them: HERE

I am currently working with David Peters. David has been in the photography business for over 35 years. He has loads of experience and is an amazing mentor, photographer and friend. He has taught me so much about photography, but more importantly about people. He shares my passion for not just taking pictures, but telling stories through images.

One of the things that I love about photography is that there is so much to learn. I can confidently say that I will never stop learning, and I love that. I will continue to grow and develop as a photographer, always. And David, who has been in the business basically his entire working life is still learning. And learning from me. I am really enjoying the fact that while he has so much experience there are still things that he has to learn. It shows me that I can live my whole life doing what I love, and never get bored.

We recently went on a shoot in China Camp, and these are a few of the images from that shoot.

This shot was taken just as the last light filled the sky. It was dark, really dark. But I love the feel of this image. It looks as if it was taken with a pin hole camera, giving it a very retro feel. It was exactly what I was looking for at that moment. And I think it came out really well.

I love these images. I love that she was so full of life and as I photographed her I could see her story unfold before me. After all, that is the essence of what I do. I capture the moment. I tell stories and each image captures something that is unique to that moment.

And, this is why it is so important to me to build a relationship with my clients. I need to know them and I need to know their story so that I can show them who they are on film. I need to preserve the story of their lives, not for them or for their children. But, for their grandchildren. For that generation that will never know them as they are right now. So that they can see the beauty of the relationships that lead to the life that they were given.

...have I mentioned that I love my job?

Big Brother:

These shots are great. I love the old school pin up shot (pin hole camera one). Impressive Sis!

(01.25.10)
Sara Atkins:

Thanks Matteo! I love that you called it a pin up shot. I suppose that is exactly what I was going for, you just put it into words for me.

Cindy:
