Welcome Hey there, thanks for stopping by! Welcome to my little corner of the internet, my place to share my voice and photography. In case you don't know me, I am Sara (that's me to the left, the one without a big white furry coat). I am a photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area, California. I LOVE my work, and you will see a bit of that sneaking in here. I also use this as a place to share other parts of my life. You will find adventures, food and little tidbits about my life with my darling husband and our two fat cats.  Please feel free to have a look around and even leave me a note. I would love to hear from you!

Green Beans are one of the sides that we LOVE. Charlie found this recipe on Epicurious and it has been a favorite ever since. He thinks that shallots make a big difference, I think you could sub red onions in a pinch and get by. Either way, be sure to make enough. The leftovers are just as good!

SaraAtkinsPhoto_110206_IMG_7761.jpg

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds green beans, trimmed and halved
  • 3/4 cup salted roasted cashews (3 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup chopped shallots (about 4 medium)
  • 2 tablespoon melted coconut oil
  • Salt & Pepper
Preparation

Preheat oven to 500°F with rack in lower third.

Toss green beans with cashews, shallots, oil, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper, then spread evenly in a large 4-sided sheet pan.

Roast, stirring occasionally, until green beans are tender and nuts are golden brown, about 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Time goes so quickly, it is hard to believe how fast our family is growing up. I can still feel the cold on my cheeks as I tried to keep up with my brothers as they built snowmen in the backyard of our home in Germany. I was only six years old at the time. Now, Matteo has two little ones of his own. Our family has grown, but the foundation is the same. We still play like we are little kids.

During our recent trip to Vancouver we went to the Granville Island Public Market. I had an amazing time wondering around the hall looking at the foods and crafts. I stopped at the Black Drop Designs booth and I fell in LOVE with Jade's beautiful jewelry. These would make perfect gifts. All of the pieces are handmade from start to finish using a combination of acrylic, sterling silver, wood, resin and a photograph. She does earrings, pendants, cuff links and rings. If you are in the process of planning a wedding: bridal party gifts.

Two Years Ago: Katie and Clinton's Guest Book

Seeing someone that you love in pain makes everything around you stand still. Nothing else matters. We were in a Olympic Lifting class, it was the last lift of the session. I can still hear Diane, 'ok this is the last one, so make it good.' We were all watching him, trying to learn what Diane was teaching, learning through him. He made it good all right. As he lifted the bar one last time it caught on his watch. He was unable to get his elbows under the bar to catch it. His arm got crushed between his knee and an 185 pound bar descending at speed. I would have gladly traded spots with him if I could. Not that I could even lift 185 pounds like that if I tried.

He laid on the ground and I ran over, he was holding his wrist. I look at it and could see it had clearly been broken. Charlie was practically translucent, all of the blood had drained from his face, he was in shock. Joe was kind enough to drive us to the hospital, I would have probably crashed the car I was in such a panic. Thank goodness he was there. Another Saturday lost to an ER waiting room. The x-ray revealed that yes, his arm was broken. Not in one place, but in two. He had broken his Ulna and his Radius.

So now, the poor fella has a broken arm and he has his first business school interview TODAY! He has to fly out to Canada tomorrow for work and probably back here on Thursday to see an orthopedic surgeon. What a mess. Lets hope for no surgery.

The current challenge is to figure out how to navigate the next several weeks with one arm. How do you tie your shoes?  How about flossing? Getting luggage into an overhead bin? How about driving? How do you get into business attire? Are sweater vests in, because that might just work.

Dad:

Charlie I feel your pain. Been there done somewhat the same. Hope you have some good drugs.

Scott Y.:

I can identify with how to navigate with only one arm. Between my shoulder injuries and my numerous finger issues on my right arm, I have become pretty adept at being left handed when needed. I am right handed so this was quite an adjustment. It's the little issues you become acutely aware of. Having to open up a can of soda with the other hand, shaving, starting up the car, putting on your seat belt, using the bathroom.... It's tough. Tell Charlie to hang in there and best of luck with the interview!

Travis is dealing with one hand right now, d/t carpal tunnel surgery. As far as flossing goes, try Pluckers they are great but in regards to another personal hygiene habit that involves toilet paper, well, that is another story! Hugs.....Jules

Lianna:

We happen to work in this field and know some pretty fine hand surgeons (Ethan especially knows his stuff) so let us know if you need a recommendation!

Charlie has been traveling to Canada every week for... way too long now. The poor fella has got to be sick of airports. Valentines day weekend we decided to give him a bit of a reprieve and I met him in Vancouver rather than him flying all the way home. It was a LOVELY weekend. Yes, by California standards it was cold. And rainy. But, we were together exploring a new city with no distractions. It was a fantastic.

The first evening I got in earlier than expected so we quickly checked into our hotel and then hurried off to explore the city. We love the architecture in Vancouver. The tall buildings with all of the glass looking over the water. It was beautiful. We wondered around, got out caffeine fix and eventually landed in Gastown. After drinks at the charming Six Acres we headed to dinner at Peckinpah BBQ kitchen-side. Our favorite seat in any restaurant is usually the seat that gives a good view of the kitchen. The Chefs in this Kitchen were particularly friendly and even shared little bits of the dishes they were serving.

The Next two days were full of exploring the Granville Island Public Market and the Aquarium. Both amazing and great ways to explore the area when it is raining outside.
