Have you met Jess? If you have, you have been blessed. She is a gem. Jess walked into my life at about the same time that Charlie did and I have loved every moment I have spent with her since. Jess also has a green heart. She works at The Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch in South Africa (the PERFECT job for her) and she brought me with her to photograph one of the events on the site. It was the kickoff for a new program called Changes Youth - Sustainability Institute aftercare.
Words from the Institute:
2 ½ years ago saw the beginning, with 18 boys, of the Changes youth group. Only 5 of those had present fathers, 3 being alcoholics. After visiting the local Stellenbosch prison, the boys chose the youth club name - from the famous Tupak song - and to symbolize the changes they would like make in their own lives.
12th April saw the beginning of Changes 4.0 - i.e. 83 mainly farm worker children between the ages of 6 and 16 arriving after school for lunch.Great vegetarian Farm to Fork food, grown by Eric, our organic farmer, or here in the Lynedoch gardens. (Not one child has asked where the meat is, and some have gone for seconds and thirds!) Then on to homework, karate, drama, soccer, gardening, drumming, games and remedial work if necessary.
This is purely voluntary - and there were bitter complaints yesterday when the bus arrived too early to take some children home. They wanted to stay later. There are more children arriving each day to ask to join - the Institute is bursting. Everywhere we look there is a child, just the way it should be.

The end of the day meant cake! The kids loved it and there were smiles all around. If you are interested in making a donation feel free to contact me Sara@SaraAtkinsPhotography.com and I can get contact information for you. We have thought of a few activities that would be great to fund, maybe a beach day for the kids. Many of them have never seen the ocean despite being just about half an hour away from it! Something like this would not cost much and would be wonderful for the kids. No pressure, just something to think about.
I love applesauce and extra sharp cheddar cheese. I put the applesauce in a bowl and slice up the cheese and line up the sticks around the outside of the bowl. I then use the cheese sticks like little spoons to scoop up the applesauce. I love it especially when the applesauce is really cold.
The reason that I love the cheese in the applesauce is more than just because it is a fantastic combination (which it is). The real reason that I love the this special combination goes back to when I was just a little girl. Being the littlest of three I had to go to bed first. It just didn't seem fare. Well, what my brothers didn't know was that after they went to bed my mom would sneak into my room and bring me into the living room. We would both sit on the floor and have a midnight snack of cheese and applesauce. It is not something that happened every night, but I do remember that it happened. I felt so special to be up past my bed time, all alone with my mom, eating cheese and applesauce. I suppose it is those little memories that make growing up so special. It is moments like these that shape us as individuals. Yes, I will probably always like cheese and applesauce. But what is more, I also know how important it is to make other people feel special. And especially, I know how important it is to let your daughter stay up past her bed time every once in a while.
The next morning we awoke and drove to the game park. Addo Elephant Park lived up to it's name. We saw more Elephants than I could have ever imagined. We spent the day gnawing on biltong and dried fruit.

We finished the day with a night drive. Unfortunately, being that it is night, there are not many pictures to show for it. However, I did finally get to see the elusive porcupine. Three of them in fact. That alone made our little drive a success.
Stay tuned for the final installment of Recipe for a road trip!
I love the baby elephant!!! You are sure giving us lots of ideas for our honeymoon next year!
(05.04.10)Adorable, isn't he? What is it about baby anything that makes us ladies melt?

Dennis: Since we know that the people you meet and your photo work are the best part of your small business, what does concern or frustrate you most?
Wow, that is a big question. It is hard for me to know where to start. There are many aspects to owning and running a business that take a lot of time and patience. Taxes for instance. Most of those things are just part of life as a business owner and in the future I will definitely be outsourcing that sort of thing!
At the moment my biggest concern is the effect that moving to a new city will have on my business. Charlie will be starting a doctorate program at UCLA in the fall which means that I will, along with our furry family, be moving to LA. The good news is that at least I will still be in California, the bad news is that I do not know a single person in the LA area. So I will essentially be starting all over. I will keep my clients in the Bay Area while branching out into southern California. So, for those of you with friends or family in Southern California... send them my way!
I hope that answered your question!
Ingredients:
- One sturdy vehicle
- Dried fruit nuts and biltong, enough to sustain you through hours and hours of driving
- Ipod loaded with songs you can sing along to
- you best friend in the seat next to you.
- one map book preferably with tattered pages and a lot of character
It was Monday afternoon, Jess and I had just finished helping with a new program where she works at the sustainability institute (more about that later). We rushed to her little farm and packed all of the necessities and we hit the road with the killers blaring. We started our little adventure off just perfectly. As we drove the sun sunk behind the mountains of the western cape and the stars came out to guide us to our first destination. We made it to Storms River in just 51/2 hours. That was some kind of record. The journey seemed to fly by, but by the time we got there we were pretty exhausted and ready to flop into bed. We had no idea what to expect at the Tube n' Axe. We walked up to a backpackers filled with young people and one very friendly bartender who showed us to our diggs for the night. We were pretty happy to find two beds and a door that locked. We fell into bed and slept beautifully. In the morning we awoke to find that our first stop was actually stunning.
Jess decided to take a little nap in the morning sunshine.

Jess took this shot as I looked out at the beautiful view.
We decided to have a little hike at Storms River National park to the Swinging bridges. The hike was easy and the views were stunning. We took in the sounds and smells and enjoyed every step. The bridges were long and narrow and stretched across a beautiful blue river mouth.

Looking down it becomes obvious that the confluence is home to many many sharks. It is a bit of a thrill to walk over sharks on a swinging bridge. On the hike back we decided it would be a good idea to walk down to one last little cove.
Jess and I couldn't help ourselves. We stripped down to our skivvies and jumped in. The water was so refreshing, it was a relief to wash off that film of dirt and sweat. After our swim we scampered past the enclaves of tourists and jumped in the jeep to continue on our adventure.
I'm so jealous!!! Looks like you had a wonderful time! Your pictures are amazing!! Can't believe you girls drove 51 1/2 hours though...that's like 10x the most I've ever driven!
(05.04.10)We did have a wonderful time! I haven't even gotten to put up my favorite shots from that trip...they are coming!!!
